I absolutely wanted to tell you about this moment, one of the most beautiful memories of my time in Thailand: the visit to the Khao Lak ethical elephant sanctuary. If you happen to be in the area and are still hesitating between several places, I'll tell you all about it.

Elephants that finally have a second life

Before arriving at this sanctuary, most of these elephants had lived in tourist camps where they were forced to carry tourists on their backs, sometimes for years. Here, they were rescued and live in semi-freedom, far from all that. The guide explained everything to us with great kindness and clarity, without ever making the visit feel heavy or preachy: we simply understood, as the explanations unfolded, how much these animals deserve what they are offered today. This isn't just a place that "claims to be ethical": the sanctuary It was a finalist in the Responsible Thailand Awards 2024-2025, in the animal welfare category. This confirms what we feel on the ground.

What is the purpose of the price of the sanctuary visit?

It's a question I always ask myself before booking this kind of activity, and I got the answer on site: the tourists' money goes primarily towards the well-being of the elephants (food, veterinary care, site maintenance). It's clear that this isn't a disguised business, but a genuine place of care.

One small statistic that struck me: these elephants can eat up to 300 kilos a day, including grass, bananas, and fruit. And their daily mud bath isn't just for fun: it cools them down while protecting their skin from the sun and insects.

Activities at the Khao Lak Elephant Sanctuary

The tour lasts approximately 2 hours, with four highlights:

  1. Feeding the elephants by hand, while the guide explains many things about each of them, their history, their character
  2. Watching them bathe, an almost hypnotic moment, they look so good
  3. Accompany them to their shower
  4. Watching them prepare their food

Important point: here, there's no direct contact, no bathing with the elephants, no selfies pressed against their trunks. We feed them and observe them, period, and that's exactly how it should be. You can see how calm, happy, and well-cared for they are, and honestly, you can feel it immediately.

My opinion on the Khao Lak ethical elephant sanctuary

It was an incredible moment, honestly one of my best memories of this trip. What I loved most was everything our guide taught us about the elephants: they used to be mistreated, and now they are literally pampered. It's heartwarming. Seeing elephants so relaxed, in an environment designed primarily for their well-being, is nothing like the typical tourist camps you see elsewhere in Thailand.

Where to stay in Khao Lak?

For our stay we slept at Kokotel Khao Lak Isara Casa The room was large and clean, there was a swimming pool, and the beach was within walking distance. The hotel is a bit out of the way, but the tour organizer picked us up directly from there. I'll tell you more about it in my article on the excursion to the Similan Islands.

FAQ: Elephant sanctuary in Thailand

How to recognize an ethical elephant sanctuary in Thailand?
